Statement of Practice My first university degree was in Genetics. Through that rigorous scientific training I came to understand the value of the experimental process in generating a certain kind of knowledge. At some level this 'rationality' and logic is personally inescapable. I have without doubt carried over a pseudo-experimental approach to my critical art practice ... and yet... a certain rebelliousness, a conscious disregard for the rigid protocol that takes itself so seriously is evident in my work. I challenge assumptions, tinker with variables, subjectively observe and participate in contrived scenarios, and playfully experiment with ideas and familiar social experiences. Complementary to this experimental background, I consciously play with provisional identities, faltering memories, and improvised narratives. At times playful and perfomrative, at others foreshadowing possible futures, my art fundamentally seeks to encourage an engagement between art, the viewer, and the broader social/political world. I received my Master of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts (2000) and also hold degrees in Genetics and Education (B.Sc. '91, B.Ed '93). I am currently based in Edmonton, Canada.
